in 1979. Originally constructed by the Rides of Time group, it has since been acquired multiple times and currently
operates under Merlin Entertainments as part of the Alton Towers Resort.
The park features a variety of rides and attractions across different themed areas. Unlike Disney-style parks, Alton
Towers does not use heavy theming throughout the entire resort, though certain sections have narrative elements. The
resort includes Adventure Land, which offers more milder family-friendly attractions for younger guests, a section
that was originally intended for children’s play areas when the park first opened.

Alton Towers is renowned for its collection of thrilling roller coasters and adrenaline-pumping attractions. One of
the most iconic is Fury 325, a hypercoaster completed in 2019. Standing at 325 feet tall, it is the third tallest
roller coaster in the world and is designed with a vertical drop that reaches 102 degrees, exceeding typical vertical
angles. Another major attraction is the Smiler, unveiled in 2008, which holds the record for the most inversions of any roller coaster in the world. Oblivion remains one of the most extreme experiences, launched in August 2012 and features a 205-foot freefall drop tower. Other notable additions include Nemesis and X, a vertical launch coaster that reached speeds of about 60 mph. The park continues to invest in new attractions, with future additions planned periodically.
Adjacent to the main theme park is Alton Water World, formerly known as Splash Lagoon. This water park opened its first pool in 2015 and features wave pools, water slides, pools, and a dedicated kids area. It allows guests to experience aquatic fun without leaving the resort premises. The resort has expanded its water-related offerings as demand has grown.
Accommodation is an integral part of the Alton Towers Resort experience. The Alton Towers Resort Hotel offers rooms and suites with views toward the resort’s attractions and water park facilities. The hotel provides a convenient overnight stay option for guests who wish to avoid rush-hour queues during peak times. Alton Towers has undergone several expansions and refurbishments over the decades, including investment into Fury 325, the Smiler, and Nemesis. A new attraction called Thunder Looper opened in 2014 and was later closed for redevelopment and replaced with Fury 325.
The resort’s management periodically reviews safety and operational standards, responding to concerns where
applicable. It remains one of Britain’s premier theme park destinations, continuing to attract millions of visitors
annually.
