Shanghai Disneyland, located in Pudong, Shanghai, is the first Disney theme park on mainland China and the sixth Disney resort globally. Officially opening on June 16, 2016, the park is a cornerstone of the Shanghai Disney Resort, a sprawling complex covering approximately 1.16 square kilometers (3.9 square kilometers for the larger resort area), featuring hotels, entertainment districts, Lake Wishing Star, and transportation facilities. Jointly operated by the Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group, the resort reflects a careful blend of Disney’s signature magic and Chinese cultural aesthetics, offering a unique “Authentically Disney” yet “Distinctly Chinese” experience for guests.
At the heart of Shanghai Disneyland stands the iconic Enchanted Storybook Castle, the tallest and largest Disney castle worldwide. Unlike other Disney parks, the castle integrates Chinese motifs, including magnolias, peonies, and auspicious clouds, celebrating both regional culture and fairy tale grandeur. The castle forms the central hub, surrounded by seven themed lands: Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Toy Story Land, and the recently opened Zootopia, making it the first Disney park to feature a Zootopia-themed land.

Mickey Avenue serves as the park’s entrance, replacing the traditional Main Street, U.S.A. with a vibrant avenue featuring Disney character inspired architecture. Guests can meet classic characters like Mickey, Minnie, and Donald Duck, shop for souvenirs at Avenue M Arcade—the largest store in the park—and enjoy themed cafes. This area seamlessly transitions visitors into the immersive worlds beyond.
Gardens of Imagination is a central garden-themed hub, spanning 11 acres and featuring mosaics of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac depicted through Disney characters. Attractions here include Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Fantasia Carousel, and the Marvel Universe meet-and-greet, allowing guests to experience a blend of Disney magic and interactive engagement. Nighttime sees the park transform with spectacular shows like Illuminate! A Nighttime Celebration, combining fountains, fireworks, and projections on the castle.
Fantasyland, located behind the castle, is the largest themed area and hosts over a dozen attractions such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Voyage to the Crystal Grotto, a first-of-its-kind experience sailing around and beneath the castle. The land features the immersive Once Upon a Time Adventure and the whimsical Alice in Wonderland Maze, drawing families into the wonder of Disney storytelling.
For adventurers, Adventure Isle presents interactive cliff and rope challenges at Camp Discovery, and rafting thrills at Roaring Rapids. Guests can experience a virtual flight around the world on Soaring Over the Horizon, which features multi sensory effects and is Shanghai Disneyland’s equivalent of the classic Soarin’ attraction.
Treasure Cove brings to life Disney’s first-ever pirate-themed park area. Here, guests can join Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, navigate Explorer Canoes, play at Shipwreck Shore, or experience Siren’s Revenge, a three-story pirate-themed play area. The area also stages live-action performances like Eye of the Storm: Captain Jack’s Stunt Spectacular, delivering a cinematic pirate adventure.
Tomorrowland delivers futuristic thrills, anchored by the TRON Lightcycle Power Run, an indoor roller coaster and one of the fastest attractions globally, along with Jet Packs, Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, and Stitch Encounter. These attractions combine high-tech visuals, interactivity, and themes from Disney films to explore the worlds of science fiction and fantasy.
Toy Story Land immerses guests in a scaled-down world inspired by Andy’s backyard. Rides like Rex’s Racer, Woody’s Roundup, and Slinky Dog Spin provide family-friendly yet exciting experiences, bringing beloved Pixar characters to life.
Finally, Zootopia, opened in December 2023, is the park’s newest land and the first Disney theme park land dedicated to the Zootopia film. The highlight, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, lets guests join Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on a high-speed chase through meticulously recreated districts of the city, blending cutting-edge animatronics and immersive storytelling.
Complementing the park are themed hotels – the luxury Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and the playful Toy Story Hotel—allowing guests convenient access with additional early park entry. Dining, shopping, entertainment, and seasonal shows across the eight lands ensure a full-day (or multi-day) immersive Disney experience.
